On June 28 I'll be fasting for 30 hours as part of our Toronto Vegetarian Food Bank's big fundraiser of the year -- #Fast4Hunger.
I helped my partner Matt Noble in starting up the Toronto Vegetarian Food Bank January of 2015. We wanted to create an initiative that addressed both human and animal suffering. The idea was to offer healthy, cruelty-free, and eco-conscious food to those under the poverty line. We thought it was important for the food bank system to reflect the city’s diverse diets and needs. Food banks are used by people who are already incredibly down on their luck and feeling desperate...we didn't want them to also have to compromise their health or their ethics when they were already in such a vulnerable place.
Pretty well immediately we had people lined up around the block to use the food bank. By the one-year mark we were serving groceries monthly to almost 200 people...from folks with diabetes or cancer whose doctors have told them they need to switch to a plant-based diet to students barely scraping by to refugees brand new to Canada & struggling to start their life here.
Meanwhile, we (especially Matt!) have had to hustle harder and harder to raise money and find corporate donations to keep the food bank afloat for all those who rely on it. Our house has become the storage center for a lot of the food, our old clunker of a vehicle has been co-opted as the food bank vehicle, and the ever-growing volunteer team is populated with our wonderful friends and family.
It has truly become a labour of love, though, to be able to help folks through one of the hardest times in their life. I sat with a woman the other day who was a social worker that lost her job due to a mental health issues. I could tell she was a proud woman, but she broke down and cried with me because it was the first time she'd had to use a food bank and was so thankful for the support and understanding. My friend Anna was telling me how one client remarked to her that she couldn't remember the last time she had piece of fruit and how another woman she was collecting groceries with had to pause over the broccoli and green peppers because the thought of fresh greens brought her to tears.
Any donation amount would be appreciated to help us keep the food bank going. Luckily we have a most wonderful donor who has offered to match every dollar donated to the Fast4Hunger. So, your $10 donation would turn into $20, your $25 would actually be $50.
If you are thinking of donating but are wanting a tax receipt, please do not donate through the fundraising page. Email: TOvegfoodbank@gmail.com
ALSO, if you still want to jump on and take part in the Fast4Hunger, we could really use more fundraisers! It's totally easy... Just click the "Join the Team" button above the photos of the fundraising participants, create your own #Fast4Hunger profile, and reach out to friends, co-workers, and family. We'd love to have you on the team!
Thank-you for your time and support!
Big Hugs, Kimberly
