BENEFITING: March of Dimes Foundation
EVENT DATE: Oct 16, 2014
It is with great pride and pleasure that we can announce that Taylor and our entire family were selected to serve as the March of Dimes Ambassador Family for the Des Moines Signature Chefs Auction on October 16, 2014. This wonderful event is a showcase for some of the finest chefs in the Des Moines area, an unforgettable way to support the March of Dimes, and a way to recognize Taylor and her incredible journey.
We were thrilled to find out in April of 2013 that we were expecting our second child. After our son Samuel was born full-term and healthy, we were expecting another uneventful, 40 week pregnancy.
On September 1, 2013, everything completely changed. After experiencing extreme abdominal pain, I was rushed to the hospital. Twenty minutes after my arrival I was wheeled back for an emergency C-section. Although I was only 24 weeks into my pregnancy, the doctors didn’t have time to administer steroid shots to boost my baby’s lung development, as they were unable to detect her heart tones and needed to deliver quickly.
Our daughter Taylor was born at just 1 pound, 6 ounces, and with no signs of life other than a slowly beating heart, which was not strong enough to keep oxygen flowing to her organs. The NICU team immediately began resuscitating her with chest compressions, oxygen, and multiple medications. After 30 minutes she had finally stabilized enough to be transferred to the NICU.
Taylor spent the next 141 days in the NICU, fighting against infections, undergoing procedures, battling brain bleeding, and working through retinopathy of prematurity. Her fighting spirit carried her through not only those first critical 72 hours, but also through each mountaintop and deep valley experience of the NICU.
We’re happy to say that Taylor will celebrate her first birthday in September, and is meeting her developmental milestones. While she does continue to use her G-tube for feeding, she is involved in physical and occupation therapy and is making great strides every week. Taylor has had a very long journey, and we both know that there may be challenges in the coming weeks, months, and years . But without the advancements in premature birth afforded by funding through the March of Dimes, her story would have had a very different and potentially tragic ending.
We appreciate your consideration of this important cause that is now so near and dear to our hearts. Together with the March of Dimes, we look forward to a day when every baby is born healthy. Thank you so much!
