BENEFITING: ECOWORKS INTERNATIONAL INC
TO URGENTLY TREAT SEVERELY MALNOURISHED YOUNG CHILDREN AND PREGNANT WOMEN in the LAKE AZUEI REGION of HAITI
MATCHING GRANT - EcoWorks International (EWI) is launching a fundraising campaign to match 2 to 1 the $7,500 grant we received from the War on Hunger Group of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Paris, France. To use the grant, however, we must raise $15,000 before January 25th, 2017.
WHAT IS THE CRITICAL NEED? – Throughout the world, millions of children die each year due to malnutrition. This is true in Haiti as well where maternal and child mortality is unacceptably high and malnutrition is one of its main causes. Malnutrition is completely curable if addressed within a defined period of time, preferably in the first 1,000 days of the child’s life, starting from the onset of the mother’s pregnancy. If this is impossible, treating the children at any age is beneficial but the later the intervention the more severe and permanent the physical and mental damage the child will suffer. This damage is called stunting, meaning the child’s development stops or slows down and becomes a handicap. A stunted child is condemned to a life of poverty as his ability to acquire new skills, keep up in school or hold a job is greatly diminished.
OUR SOLUTION - "FEED-a-CHILD" is a pilot project to identify and treat severely malnourished children and pregnant women. It is also a training program for health-workers and parents, and includes a regional information campaign to raise awareness among the entire population about malnourishment, how to recognize it and where to seek treatment – and, very importantly, to promote the vital need of breastfeeding. Our first goal is to treat 200-300 patients and train their immediate families in nutrition so that patients do not relapse; conduct region-wide information campaign to fight malnutrition and make breastfeeding the norm; and, also, to gather data which will be made public and use that data when expanding the Feed-a-Child program to the entire region of 300,000 inhabitants.
Feed-a-Child is part of our large regional economic growth program Talia Farms Agricultural Cooperative which focuses on creating employment for 2,000 small-scale farming families who currently live in poverty (2,000 families equals 10,000 individuals). Talia Farms Cooperatives will provide permanent training and comprehensive support to produce organic vegetables for the domestic and export markets which will enable these farming families to earn a living wage and lift themselves out of poverty. Families whose children are in the Feed-a-Child project will be among the first to enroll in Talia Farms Cooperatives to break their cycle of poverty and ensure that their children grow up happy and healthy.
