BENEFITING: ALARA ADVOCACY FOUNDATION
In California, the elderly and people with disabilities are losing important benefits. Those who receive SSI benefits (typically someone with a developmental disability that prohibits them from working full time) receive less than $950 per month to pay for rent, utilities, food and other bills. If they have a job, then they can't make over a certain amount or their checks are reduced, leaving them well below the poverty level. Senior citizens are in the same boat. For those who have In Home Support Services (IHSS), a caregiver comes and helps them clean and cook. However those services are getting cut and some of them have to pay a share of the cost, which severely cuts into their budget. We are starting a service that delivers food from food pantries and other items such as clothing and personal care products to senior citizens and people with disabilities who have transportation issues. The money raised will help pay for the transporation costs and help purchase needed items for two vulnerable populations.
