THE STORY:

Hello guys. My name is James and I am stationed at Fort Drum, New York. Since arriving here early November, I have become very fond and accustomed to seeing the large number of groundhogs that are here on base. They always brighten my day as I observe their burrowing and family habits and I find them a unique and entertaining part of Fort Drum. The past two weeks I have been dismayed at the sight of Public Works covering their burrows trying to rid them out of the ground and such. I already spoke to the Chief Director of PW and they said they are causing problems and they need to go. I find this completely idiotic. Therefore, I am trying to start a small fund to buy materials for these groundhogs to eat and get ready for the next winter, which is brutally cold up here (-40 is a usual temperature mid-February). All of this money will go to not only food for them (alfalfa, fresh berries from the commisary, bark, peas, and dandelions), but also for artificial burrow materials that I will construct for them and leave openly avaiable to them to gather for the winter, including: cotton down, duck feathers, paper mulch). I have done tons of research on this and with my experiance of raising three groundhogs myself, I am fully confident I can not only help the population of groundhogs, but also give back to such a unique part of the fauna of Fort Drum. Thanks for taking the time to read this guys. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted. I know this probably won't go anywhere, but either way I can't wait to share the progress, no matter how little or how much I can do. Much love and god bless, James
