BENEFITING: American Heart Association
Hello there! Thank you for taking the time to click this page and learn about my fundraiser.
My name is Kelsey, and I'm a seventeen-year-old high school senior residing in a small, unheard of town in New England. As part of my senior year, I'm required to do a "Senior Project" which can be equated to an independent study or a capstone type of project. For my senior project, I'm hosting a fundraising 5k road race for the American Heart Association and it's inspired by my oldest nephew who was born with a congenital heart defect, TAPVR.
My oldest nephew, Gabe, was born in September of 2011 with a rare congenital heart disease; it was nearly fatal if he didn’t get surgery immediately. This sudden and unexpected turn of events rocked the boat in our family. Luckily, he was able to get the surgery but it certainly put many things in life into perspective. Due to this emotional toll and strengthening event, it seemed like a good idea to incorporate it into my senior project. When my mom told me about Gabe’s condition, she just told me there was something wrong with his heart; now, I was fifteen when he was born so it’s not as if I wouldn’t have understood if she told me about his defect more in detail. However, when she explained he had TAPVR, a congenital heart defect/disease, I had no idea what that meant; as I told more and more people about Gabe’s special condition, I realized they didn’t really know what it was either. Therefore, I want to raise awareness about different heart defects, specifically what my nephew was diagnosed with, as well as fundraise for the American Heart Association.
My nephew has inspired to help other newborns and children with congenital heart diseases, and I hope his story has resounded in your hearts as well.
Thank you for taking the time and donating!
