Three years ago, I was living in Los Angeles with my husband and our rescue dog Skippy. Funny story about Skippy- I was volunteering with a rescue group in LA area and Skippy was my first foster through them. He was supposed to stay with us for only three days and today he has been with us for almost 4 years and I am still not sure how it all happened.
Before we got Skippy, our favorite thing to do was to take a impromptu drive from LA to Vegas on weekend for quick rejuvenation. However, with Skippy, taking a last-minute vacation was easier said than done. Finding a pet-friendly hotel was no easy task; and even when we did find one, it sounded crazy to pay $25-$50 per day in pet fees. At the same time, we did not want to leave Skippy in a boarding facility where we knew he might get sad and depressed.
Only once we were able to take a trip to Vegas without Skippy; our Neighbor had generously offered to foster Skippy in her home in our absence. Although we were nervous about it, it turned out to be the best thing ever. Throughout the trip I was assured that Skippy was in good hands and I was able to call and check on him as many times as I wanted. Skippy was (as always) a happy dog when we came back.
This story was my inspiration for this project- FidoRescueFido.
I want to build a database/a community where pet owners can connect with one another, and with the pet rescue groups in their area, when they are in need of a sitting/boarding service.
The concept is simple- as a pet owner when you need a sitter or need to leave your pet when you are taking a vacation, you will enter your (and your pet's) details and your requirements in the database. The database will then show you your neighbors who are willing to take care of your pet and available pet rescue groups in your area (based on the information you entered and your preferences) who would be willing to foster your pet for short-term. Instead of paying for these services you would be making a monetary donation to the rescue group (of course what you decide to bring back for your neighbors is between you and them:)). The rescue groups will use these funds to support their rescue activities and this in turn may reduce the number of pets that are euthanized in shelters each year for the lack of space. Sounds too good to be true! Well it can be true.
All I need is your support and any amount of change you can spare.
Minimum suggested donation is $10 but no amount is too small. My goal is to raise $50,000 so I can hire the right people to update the website (I already have a basic website), build the database, enroll the rescue groups, market this concept appropriately and have some money left to pull out a few animals from the local Chapel Hill shelter.
Interested in helping out. Visit the website below to learn more. I have a cool video which explains the concept in a very cute way.
Interested in helping out but do not have change to spare. No problems, I would apprecaite it so much if you could share my story, this concept and fundraiser and our video/website with your family friends on facebook, twitter- basically whereever you can. You never know who might gets touched and decides to help out.
Join me! Skippy and his brother/sisters will thank you.
