Brooklyn Community Foundation
September 18, 2016
On Saturday, October 15, Team Bring It On Fleek will be competing in Fight Gone Bad: a team crossfit workout in honor of the Brooklyn Community Foundation. This year each team will once again be raising money to benefit the Brooklyn Community Foundation.
As you may remember from the classic and masterful film, "Bring It On", the Toros Cheerleading Squad, based out of a High School in San Diego, had ample funding and plenty of money to attend the National Cheerleading Competition. Meanwhile, the East Compton Clovers could barely afford uniforms for their team. Jokes aside, property tax is still the number one determinate for how much funding schools receive: the higher the property value of homes, the more funding the public schools get, which leaves communities like East Compton, and even neighborhoods in Brooklyn at an automatic disadvantage.
That's why we rely on Community-Based Organizations like the Brooklyn Community Foundation. The Brooklyn Community Foundation is the first and only public foundation solely dedicated to Brooklyn’s charitable community, working in partnership with generous donors and community leaders to bolster vital nonprofits, strengthen neighborhoods, and increase opportunities for youth. Since their founding in 2009, the Foundation has provided over $25 million in grants to more than 300 nonprofits throughout the borough. Some of my favorites include the 2015 grant to support for the Youth-led Transformative Justice initiative to organize alternatives to suspension in up to five public schools in under-resourced and over-policed Brooklyn communities like Brownsville and Bed Stuy, or the $40,000 grant in East New York operating support to advance youth internship programs, a pipeline of leadership opportunities for participants as they age out of programs, a new youth advisory board, and youth engagement in the City's development plan for East New York.
If everyone raises $100, we will raise $12,000 collectively! Please help our team meet our goal!!! BRING. IT. ON.
