According to AVERT HIV-related stigma and discrimination refers to prejudice, negative attitudes and abuse directed at people living with HIV and AIDS. Some of the effects of stigma include the following. Loss of income and livelihood Loss of marriage and childbearing options Poor care within the health sector Withdrawal of care giving in the home Loss of hope and feelings of worthlessness Loss of reputation. And most importantly Stigma not only makes it more difficult for people trying to come to terms with HIV and manage their illness on a personal level, but it also interferes with attempts to fight the global HIV and AIDS epidemic as a whole. It is because of the above statistics and issues that UNYPA came up with the idea that is the Y+ Beauty Pageant. The Y+ Beauty pageant is an annual event that was developed to celebrate Beauty with Zero Discrimination and has been running since 2014 and is comprised of young men & women between the ages of 16 – 25. The essence of pioneering this event was aimed at fighting stigma and discrimination against young people affected and living with HIV and AIDS. (Y+ represents Young people living with HIV).
