On 11 August 2010, our first son Archie was born in the Cayman Islands. It was clear from the moment he arrived that there were complications and within 12 hours we were airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital where we spent 3 months in the neo-natal intensive care unit. Archie had 2 heart operations but we had reached the end of both our insurance coverage and our savings - thanks to the generosity of friends and family we were able to fly home to the UK where he underwent open heart surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He was 9 months old.
We were and are lucky. Archie is now 6 years old and thriving but many people we met at MCH and since have not been so lucky and there are many families in the Cayman islands who are struggling to pay for medical expenses incurred in the US to cover their sick children. I have long wanted to do something to try to help and have now been afforded the opportunity. On January 7 2017, the great Manny Pacquiao will be in the Cayman Islands to host a night of boxing (www.islandrumble.com) and almost unbelievably, I have been given the chance to have a charity bout on the card. Despite my advancing years (!), I still harbour dreams of being Rocky on a big stage and it does not get much bigger than this. I am in training with my close friend and Cayman Islands national coach, Ryan Barrett and intend to give it everything I have on the night before hanging the gloves up for good.
I will be supporting 2 charities - the RBaby foundation (www.rbabyfoundation.org) which has committed to saving as many babies' lives as possible through providing optimal paediatric emergency training, research, treatment and equipment and Hart 4 Hearts which is affiliated with the Cayman Heart Fund and provides help to Cayman Islands based families with children with congenital heart defects and who need funding to assist them with the uninsured expenses associated with urgent paediatric cardiology healthcare.
Donations to RBaby can be made on this site. For Hart4Hearts, please go to www.caymangiftcertificates.com/cayamn-heart-fund1
Any support you could give would be very gratefully received.
Chin down, hands up.
