THE STORY:

Fighting AIDS through Education Strategies (FATES) is a project designed to slow HIV transmission, improve care and reduce the impact of HIV and AIDS on youth in sub-Saharan Africa. This prevention seeks to protect and improve the well-being of affected young people aged 12 to 24 in Cameroon and in Burkina Faso; furthermore, it aims to decrease the burden of HIV/AIDS on them, their families and the communities through educational and psychosocial support; Finally, FATES intends to support households with Vulnerable Children. HIV and AIDS education can take place in many different environments, from classes at school to families and friends sharing knowledge at home.

New research attributes the increase of HIV’s at-risk behavior involvement of youth in Sub-Saharan Africa to idleness resulting from the non-existence of after school programs, low-skill job and other absence of global social infrastructures; in addition, other common factors associated with at-risk behavior involvement, include poor family life, lack of protection against abuse and violence, low self-esteem, and poverty.

Through its involvement inside the communities, AFAID came to the conclusion that effective HIV and AIDS education can help prevent new infections reduce stigma and discrimination. In that regard, AFAID found it vital to create and implement HIV/AIDS Clubs in schools; since schools play a major role in shaping the attitudes, opinions and behavior of young people all over the world.
AFAID provides state-of-the-art interventions to identify what is needed, tailor programs to local needs, and delivers realistic and appropriate resourced responses. Once updated about AIDS, young people will be able to convey the knowledge received to their parents, their friends or even their neighbors; this is a significant approach to reach families and many communities.
The results coming out of this project will not only equip young people with the knowledge and tools to preclude themselves from becoming infected with the virus, but they will also protect and support children, prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, and shape new behavior in their respective life; in addition, they will promote prevention and care, as well as access to treatment.
The total budget for the project is $185,867. During year one, we plan to aggressively initiate fundraising efforts to sustain the program for the following two years.
