We are the Portland State University students of Carrie Cohen's Spring 2012 Capstone: Pregnancy and Childbirth. We are partnering with the Northwest Mother's Milk Bank in an effort to help them open their doors as the first certified donor breast milk bank in Oregon!
Katie was born two months early. Her mother was sick and in danger of dying because of her pregnancy. Once Katie was born she was taken from her mother while the doctors tried to stabilize her. Katie’s mother was not able to feed her because of the life threatening situation. Fortunately, the NICU where Katie was born had special milk for her small fragile body. Katie’s intestines weren’t fully developed and formula would have killed the intestines that were developed. The NICU was able to give her donated human milk. After a few days Katie’s mom was able to feed her baby. Katie remained in the NICU for a few months; her mother driving to the hospital twice a day to deliver mild she had pumped. When Katie went home with her family she was fully developed, eating and digesting well.
