You often hear that when children enter into foster care, they are placed in a stranger’s home with nothing except for the clothes on their back and possibly a garbage bag with items that were hastily packed. My husband and I found this to be true when we became foster parents and received our first placement. Thanks to generous donors and The Bair Foundation, we were able to provide for immediate needs for these sweet children with basic necessities and clean clothes.
We also quickly learned that these children had severe developmental delays due to neglect and a lack of social interaction. They craved attention and they started to look forward to stories at bedtime after only a few evenings in our home. Books have become so important and we can visibly see the impact they have on these children. School attendance with foster children is often interrupted by moving or changes in placement and literacy levels are lower than that of the average student.
I share this information because as a foster parent and an Usborne Books & More Representative, I’ve been moved to do something to help other children who are shuffled through the system and who are served by The Bair Foundation in Pittsburgh. The Bair Foundation is a non-profit organization who trains and certifies foster families and supports the foster process for children in care.
Our GOAL is to raise $1000 in donations with a $500 match from Usborne Books & More ($1500 TOTAL) in order to purchase books. We will purchase a book for EACH child in care as well as books for the anticipated number of children in foster care placement over the next few months.
