Finding Ourselves: The Search for True Cultural Identity
Organized by: Keith Young
I'm doing a documentary called "Finding Ourselves: The Search for True Cultural Identity" about the search for true national identity and the historical roots of the people now called "African-Americans".
This project began as a quest to put together a family tree when I discovered I couldn't go back any more than 3 generations to the history of my great-grand parents. As I was searching for my own personal family history I stumbled upon some historical records that had been purposefully hidden, not just from me but from my entire culture!
I discovered that my ancestors have a vast history of creating grand civilizations and spreading the knowledge of culture, arts, sciences and philosophy throughout the entire world for thousands of years BEFORE the time of chattel slavery in the West. According to the United States culture that I live in and the public school system that educated me when it comes to my identity I am an "African-American," "Black," "Colored," "Negro," "Native-American," from the continent of Africa via "Down-South".
The problem is, non of those things are an identity they are all mere descriptors, political and legal terms to describe a people who's history has been wiped out. This project is about finding our personal and collective history and then sharing that knowledge with the people.
The plan is to travel from the America's and its adjoining islands through all the so called slave routes and finally to Africa to discover the cultural identities of all the people who are now called "African-American".
I have been doing free community educational programs, presentations and lectures in and around Detroit, Michigan since 2009, based on my research of the history, arts, sciences, philosophies and spiritual teachings of Africa and various other indigenous cultures throughout the diaspora. I've been making my presentations available on video online and in DVD format for just as long.
For this project I need your help to continue my research to bring more knowledge to the people. The funds raised will go to cover the costs of travel, documentation, researchers, video editing and production costs and fees. Any help would be much appreciated and amounts even as small as one dollar will go a long way!
