FINDING THEIR WINGS-HELPING YOUTHS AGING OUT OF FOSTER CARE
Organized by: Tangela Day
An average of 26,000 youths age out of foster care every year. There are little to no financial resources when they step out into the world on their own. More than 1 in 5 will be homeless. Only 58 percent will graduate from high school versus 87 percent that are supported by a family. Two percent will graduate from college by age 25 compared to 28 percent of non-fosters. Seventy-one percent of females will become pregnant by the age of 21. One in four will be incarcerated within two years of aging out of the system. They face higher rates of unemployment, criminal convictions, public assistance, and involvement in the child welfare system. (research by Jim Casey Youth Opportunities) They are often forced into illegal activities just to survive. Finding Their Wings is dedicated to developing community partnerships with those who are passionate about combating homelessness and stopping the cycle of hopelessness. We will attain these goals through financial assistance for housing, healthy meals, personal care, and transportation needs. We will provide mentors to educate them on successful employment skills, supporting their efforts to apply to and graduate from college, and life skills needed to become independent adults. With your help, we can complete our campaign to obtain nonprofit status and create sustainable methods to continually support those who are so very vulnerable. We want to promote education on the significant need for caring foster parents and adoption for older children. We need to help those who are facing a big scary world without anyone to turn to when they need help. They are the forgotten ones. They are those that never got their "Forever Family". We would like to show them that someone cares for them. It is our dream to help them reach for theirs. We hope to extend this program into other communities in the future. However, we need help. Please support them in Finding Their Wings.
