UPDATE 10/8:  Statement from the pastor, Fr. Talarico: "Planning to rebuild"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=262&v=YAdMlHE1tt0

This venerable old church is an architectural treasure designed by noted Chicago architect Henry Sclacks in 1923. In 2004, after languishing in a state of disrepair for many years, the Archdiocese confided the property (previously known as St. Gelasius Chruch) to the priests of the Institute of Christ the King, who have been administering to the needs of the neighborhood and working laboriously to restore this landmark property over the last ten years.

This fire represents a devastating setback for the ministry of the church, its members, and for the many efforts that have been made over the last decade to restore, bit by bit, this anchor of peace, prayer, and beauty within the Woodlawn community.

Right now, this church and its people need your help. Losing a roof at the start of October--with Chicago's notoriously harsh winter only weeks away--could prove to be an even greater disaster for this community.

Reports have indicated the the structure is sound, however, without work to stabilize and repair the roof, this church and its important mission for South Chicago will be lost forever.

I am asking you to be generous toward this fundraising goal.

I have started this fundraiser because I was heartbroken upon seeing the news of this fire. While I was a university student living in Chicago between 2004 and 2008, I volunteered my time and labor to help with the restoration efforts of this church. During that time I came to realize and see firsthand the importance of this church and its ministry for the spiritual needs of the neighborhood, as well as the tireless dedication of its pastor, priests, and many others who work and volunteer their time and service in and around this beautiful building. They are my friends to this day.  For them, this morning has been one of the worst in their lives. Please do not let them go unaided. Please help.

Join me in giving whatever you can, to help continue the mission of revitalization, both spiritual and physical, of this community in need.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to the roof restoration. -MP
