Since 1978, First Step has been working for peaceful families and safe communities in Wayne County, Michigan. First Step is the only non-profit agency in outer Wayne County providing comprehensive services for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Until no child needs us, we need you! Each year, First Step is challenged to raise approximately $300,000 to support the operation and growth of our Children's Program. Your generous gift will make it possible for us to continue to offer our children's services free of charge to families who come to us for help.
- First Step offers counseling, advocacy and recreational activities for the families in our shelter and transitional housing programs. These activities are vital to increasing the parent/child bond and assist in their healing process.
- In July of 2015, we opened a beautiful new playground, outdoor fitness center and healing garden. Our hope is that by providing healthy opportunities for purposeful play we will help the children in our care fight depression, assist in building motor skills and help parents build and rebuild a fun and supportive relationship. Your support will help us sustain our playground and ensure it is always cared for and open to the families at First Step.
- A large part of our prevention strategy is focused on educational outreach. Our trained educators raise awareness and provide educational programming to hospitals, police departments and schools on the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual assault. Your gift is necessary to help us continue to increase prevention and educational outreach for children and professionals in our communities.
- Counselors and volunteers who treat children and families where child abuse and neglect has occurred endure many stains themselves. Your gift will ensure our advocates receive the essential support required to prevent early manifestations of fatigue while reducing the impact of secondary trauma.
We hope you will support this vital program benefiting the most vulnerable and at risk population in our community: children fleeing violence.
