Since 1978, First Step has been working for peaceful families and safe communities in Wayne County, Michigan. First Step is the only non-profit agency in outer Wayne County providing comprehensive services for victims of domestic and sexual violence.
Survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault depend on you! All too often survivors endure extremely painful and fearing living environments. It takes tremendous courage for victims to leave a violent situation, face their assailant or seek help to recover trauma of domestic or sexual violence.
The risk of violence escalating when a women attempts to leave is very real. As a result, many victims remain trapped in dangerous home environments. Rarely are victims able to escape with receiving help, guidance and support from others. This is where you can help, this is where you can make a difference.
- For many, First Step's 24-Hour helpline is a lifeline. Your support ensures specially trained advocates are available to survivors any time, day or night, 365 days a year. Our advocates provide a listening ear, encouragement, safety planning and access to valuable resources.
- Your gift will ensure our 24-Hour on call trained Assault Response advocates are always available to meet survivors in hospital emergency rooms, police departments or schools. Our Assault Reponse team provides survivors with emotional support, clean clothing (as theirs is often taken as evidence), assistance with understanding their rights, options and resources while they recieve treatment for the crimes they have experienced.
- When victims of violence fear for thier lives, and fear that police and court protection isn't enough to keep them safe, survivors often seek shelter. Your gift, no matter the size, will help us sustain emergency housing for up to 50 people on any given night. In 2015, we provided families with 13,913 nights of safe shelter.
