Firstambassador's fight against Poverty
Organized by: Iyayi Obakpee
The fight of Poverty in Nigeria has been a long struggle and tougher by the day as the Economic situation got worsened by corrupt government, leaders and the current economic recession. People are getting agitated at their deplorable state and more so as effort to improve their condition is being truncated by bad policies and hyper inflation. As the numbers of impoverished people increase the more the crime hence the emergence of sects and militants leading to destruction of lives and property further giving rise to hunger and homelessness. This is the current situation in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. We have increasing numbers of homeless persons and people living in abject poverty with no access to food, portable water and shelter. The number of persons accessible to a meal per day are reducing resulting to desperation and involvement in social vices, prostitution and insecurity. People are now engaged in various activities most of which are inimical as a means of survival. Majority of the populace in this region are suffering and there are cases of death and much more unrecorded. The people are crying for help and shouting as loud as they can but it seem their voices are not heard considering little or no relief from Government. There are also the problem of oil spill pollution of water and land, more and more people are in dire need of rescue. Empowerment/Intervention program and Skill acquisition among other useful scheme are assured ways to ameliorate the suffering and fight poverty. We don't have the resources to engage in these schemes and help as much people possible. The Niger Delta occupies 7.5% of the total land area of Nigeria, 70,000km2, and is home to approximately 30 million people. This is a fight we are determined to win and we need as much support we can get. Your contribution, no matter how little will in no small way help in this fight against poverty.
