A group of 15 youth and adults from First Church in Windsor, UCC will spend July 13 - 22, 2016 to volunteer with Re-Member, an independent registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota, USA. Re-Member strives to improve the quality of reservation life through relationships, shared resources and volunteer services. The FCW youth service team will grow through this experience. They'll learn about and respect indigenous culture and spirituality, witness the extreme poverty afflicting the Lakota people of Pine Ridge and participate in work projects. These projects range from building bunk beds, constructing access ramps or skirting trailers. Each day will end with a reflection of their's day's work. Our group will meet the Lakota people and neighbors, make crafts and eat traditional foods. They'll also travel the reservation and tour the Badlands and other surrounding national parks.
For 15 years, First Church in Windsor has offered an annual summer youth service trip to high school youth. All participating youth and adults are required to put in 20-30 hours of sensitivity, safety and tool training and to contribute to all fundraising efforts. Past service trips have focused on local and/or rural poverty and hurricane disaster relief with an emphasis on rebuilding and construction projects in TN, WV, KY, NY, VT and NJ. This year, the team wished to learn about Lakota culture and to use their skills and talents to contribute to the alleviation of extreme poverty experienced on the reservation.
Contributions to this fundraiser will help the group to: finance group lodging, food, airfare and land-travel expenses; defray Re-Member's participation fees; cover the entrance and parking fees charged at surrounding national and state parks the group will be touring; help support Re-Member's work project expenses; and allow for the group to make a donation to Re-Member for their continued work.
