THE STORY:

About three years ago, I had to go to a local fiction reading as a class requirement. My classmates and I were expecting someone reading deep but incomprehensible stuff. Instead, there were about a dozen first graders in gold paper crowns reading the novels that they had written for National Novel Writing Month. I'm pretty sure it was deep stuff, although with the giggles and random tangents it was hard to understand.
The Office of Letters and Light started the Young Writers Program in 2005. Instead of reading books and writing essays in the months of October and November, kids get to read books and write novels!!! I interned for them last year and edited the downloadable workbooks and lesson plans. Every year, they send out hundreds of novel writing kits to class rooms across the country. And they do this for free, which means that their infinite goodwill and awesomeness is constrained by...well...money.
If you live in the Bay Area, you can totally help pack novel kits in September/ October/ November or you can donate through here or at nanowrimo.org.
