Since 1978, First Step has been working for peaceful families and safe communities in Wayne County, Michigan. First Step is the only agency in Wayne County providing comprehensive services and support for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
First Step staff members and volunteers are specially trained to assist and empower survivors of domestic violence, dating violence and sexual assault. We are skilled experts in domestic violence, sexual assault and trauma. We know the laws, have the knowledge and experience with the dynamics of these crimes and understand the effects they have on the human spirit.
All programs offered at First Step free and confidential. Our programs are specifically designed to help survivors of violence overcome the lack of intervention and support, the feelings of powerlessness, isolation, physical danger and fear, as well as the financial, emotional and cultural barriers that victims of violence often face when seeking help.
First Step offers healing, hope and protection through the following programs: Temporary Emergency Housing (Shelter), 24-Hour Help Line and Assualt Response, Counseling and Advoacacy, Transistional Support Housing, Community and Legal Response Assistance, Children's Adovacy and Prevention Programs as well as food, clothing, household goods and many other additional needs to help survivors transistion.
