Our journey with breast cancer started six years ago - when our colleague Kristen Wiley was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer. We all watched her treatment journey that year and cheered her on as she completed her first marathon in 2013 - just to spite cancer. HA - take that cancer. She inspired us all.
Then one year later, I received my own diagnosis of bi-lateral breast cancer. And this company rallied and cheered me on as I went through my treatment. Not being quite as stubborn as Kristen - I ONLY ran a six mile leg of the relay in my first Donna Marathon weekend of 2014 - but it was a great experience - and I was hooked.
Since then I've run the half marathon each year to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and to support underserved women going through breast cancer treatment in the southeast region. There are so many who don't have the kind of support that Kristen and I did - and we want them to know they are not alone in their journey. The DONNA Foundation does this.
This year we will have five breast cancer suvivors on our team FIS... five women who have been impacted by this disease - and are all walking as survivors. A testament to the strides we've made, but pushing to finish this disease. We all thank you for your support!
