There is a little known problem with the Oregon and Washington States Commercial fishing families. They are subsequently being starved out by the state of Oregon’s and Washington’s discriminatory fishing policies. Just last year commercial fishermen were promised 102 hours of fishing in January of 2015 for the peak of the spring salmon Season which occurs between the end of March and the beginning of June. By April 20th 2015 Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife rescinded 112Hrs of commercial fishing on the Colombia River and its tributaries. This effectively cut the local gillnet fleet out of a spring season. Then ODFW did this again during the fall Salmon season. Resending previously adopted season days and hours. Then as if to really make it a personal insult they actually took a portion of the fish quota allocated to the commercial fishing fleet and gave it to the buoy 10 sport fleet so they could extend the sport fishing season in to late October. While closing off Youngs Bay completely too commercial fishing early. Their reasoning was, According to Chris Kern; “based on the poor returns so far this year, we are concerned about reaching hatchery brood stock needs,” So The agency curtailed commercial fishing in the Youngs Bay area in order to limit harvest of the select-area bright fall Chinook. Even though Biologists speculated the fish were probably holding in the mainstream and not moving into Youngs Bay because of low river levels caused by a lack of rain. The Daily Astorian Published: August 28, 2015. Yes staying in the Buoy 10 Sports fishing area and being caught by sportsmen and not the commercial fishermen that pay every year to raise and release those fish. What has resulted from years and years of this kind of discrimination from the state has left coastal fishing families destitute. I am asking for funds to help these struggling fishermen and their families to purchase licenses, gear, and food to help keep some 400 small business and all the jobs that their fishing contributes to going. In this weak economy all of us live in, we need to save all the jobs we can. You can help by starting hear. Thank You!
