Even though I am now working in DC, I am actively involved in the West Side YMCA, as I have been for the last 20 years. Last year, you supported me in the Fit for All 5K for Diabetes awareness. My running performance was pretty shabby but through your support, the money you helped me raise was anything but. I ask you again to lend your support.
Please note that the Corporate Code of Conduct of the company for which I work prohibits me from soliciting anything more than $25 - $50 per person. This applies to anyone who does business or has any prospect of doing business with my company. I ask that you respect this limitation. After all, presidential campaigns have been won on grass roots support.
The Fit for All program is designed to address the NYC growing epidemic of childhood obesity. In a study of more than 600,000 students conducted during the 2007-2008 school year, more than 21% of NYC school age children were considered obese and another 19% were classified as overweight. Compared with children nationwide, NYC children are more likely to be obese or overweight (5.5% higher than the national average), and certain neighborhoods such as Harlem, where Grosvenor Neighborhood House Y is located, report that 48-49% of the children 6-12 years old are overweight or obese. There is a severe need for this program, which will incorporate physical activity and nutritional education into a program offered at our Y, in a fun and safe environment.
This year's Fit for All 5K race has been bought to you by Univision.
