I'm writing to tell you about Alternative Breaks (aB), an exciting organization I am involved with through Florida International University. Alternative Breaks at FIU is ranked second in the nation among similar service learning programs across the country. This organization empowers and challenges students and faculty/staff participants to understand our relationship within the global community through education, reflection and direct service while on a weekend to week-long service trips over Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring, and Summer Break. This year the FIU Alternative Breaks program will send over 300 students to more than 25 sites throughout the United States and the world to address a variety of issues like Homelessness, HIV/AIDS, Environmentalism, and Rural Poverty.

I am excited to have the opportunity to participate in aB as a participant/staff member with a great group of students over the upcoming Spring Break. Our designated project happens to be with one of FIU's oldest aB site partners and addresses an issue that's very close to my heart and the hearts of countless others. We will be going to Long Way Home that has dedicated itself to building a school in this town to bring education and job training to the people of this Mayan community. The education will in turn help them find employment. Located in San Juan de Comalapa, Guatemala, Long Way Home is using alternative construction techniques with materials that would otherwise be burned or enter the water supply since this city has had a garbage problem that can cause illness and disease. Long Way home has come up with a solution to this dilemma. Through education, employment, and health the people of San Juan de Comalapa have the power to increase the quality of life for generations to come. To learn more, please visit their website at

Monetary support from family members, friends, and organizations is extremely instrumental in making all aB trips possible. Any donation you are able to make will go towards the cost of our project and directly support the community we will be serving. To make a contribution, please send a check made out to Alternative Spring Breaks to FIU c/o Danilo Le Sante, 11200 SW 8th St. GC 242, Miami, FL 33199. Thank you very much for your support.
