Program:

The F.E.E.D (Farming, Education, Employment, and Distribution) Program is designed for out of school out of work young adults to develop the knowledge, skills and opportunities for the community.  Helping individuals to become adequately educated, gainfully employed, economically stable and socially engaged within the growing sectors of the local food economy in Indianapolis.  Pro-grammatically, we meet young adults where they are by collaboratively creating an environment where young people feel safe, valued, respected, and challenged to live into their greatest potential, despite the trauma and sense of failure from the disparities of their neighborhoods and the shortcomings of their educational experience.    

Our farm provides a place where youth and young adults from the community can begin to imagine careers; like soil and waste management, greenhouse maintenance, produce farming, livestock, beekeeping, horticulture, landscaping and more. Out of school and out of work young adults are often shut out of opportunities to provide for themselves and contribute to our world. Along with the lower possibility of having a job comes the higher likelihood of poverty. Through urban agriculture, we give everyone the chance to plant hope, grow abilities, and harvest opportunity. Urban agriculture has quickly become a viable economic opportunity in low income communities across the nation.

Past Success:

Flanner House Urban Farm has had 2  successful years of harvest producing over 100,000 pounds with much more of a variety of produce in the second year (collard greens, kale, bell peppers, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, serrano peppers, Thai chili peppers, string beans, watermelon, a variety of herbs,...) expanding in educating the community around healthy eating.  Through the Food Justice and F.E.E.D(Farming Education Employment and Distribution) program there has been over 30 young people between the ages of 16-24 who were employed and trained. These youth and young adults played a major role in the last 2 years of production (preparation, harvest and distribution) from the Flanner House Urban Farm.
