BENEFITING: March of Dimes Foundation
EVENT DATE: Oct 08, 2015
It is with great pride and pleasure that we can announce that Kiyah and our entire family were selected to serve as the March of Dimes Ambassador Family for the Des Moines Signature Chefs Auction on October 8, 2015. This wonderful event is a showcase for some of the finest chefs in the area, an unforgettable way to support the March of Dimes, and a way to recognize Kiyah and her incredible journey.
Kiyah, along with her quadruplet siblings Zane, Tatianna, and Enzo were born on December 14, 2011 at just 22 weeks and 6 days gestation, weighing between 14 oz, and 1 lb, 5 oz. While we were expecting a high-risk pregnancy, we weren’t prepared for my water to break at just 20 weeks. We knew that this was going to be an uphill battle for each of our babies. Sadly, we had to say goodbye to Zane the next day. The pain was unbearable, and intensified when we lost Enzo on Christmas Day. Each day was a struggle of hope and grief. Tatianna blessed us with almost a month before passing away on January 11th. Our sadness consumed us.
Born at only 14 ounces, Kiyah slowly progressed, fighting her way through multiple complications. She had her own struggles with extra spinal fluid, paper thin skin, an enlarged heart, and severely underdeveloped lungs. She required constant ventilations, oxygen, and even nitric oxide. We clung to every moment with her-savoring the chance to bathe her and hold her, something that most parents take for granted. On June 11, Kiyah received her tracheotomy and g-tube, and after 250 days in the NICU we finally brought our baby girl home.
Kiyah is now three, and amazes us every day with her happiness and health. While she continues to receive therapy services for her speech and cognitive delays, as well as her minor physical delays, she has become a full time walker, and her trach has been removed. Every day with our precious girl we are reminded of the strength of our tiny fighter, and the spirit of her siblings that she carries on. While she has had a very long journey, our story ends on a happy note. Without the advancements in premature birth care afforded by funding through agencies such as the March of Dimes, and the amazing care of the Mercy NICU, Kiyah’s story would have had a very different ending.
Our family has a big goal this year to work with the March of Dimes to raise $5,000 through presenting our story during the Fund the Mission portion of the evening. All proceeds help fund their mission: to give all babies a healthy start to life. We’d love to have you contribute towards this goal. Your 100% tax-deductible gift goes a long way towards helping tiny babies like Kiyah. On behalf of our family, we want to make a difference to others - no parent should have to make the decisions we did or spend over 250 days in the NICU. We appreciate your consideration of this important cause that is now so near and dear to our hearts.
