At this point, I think most all of you are aware of The Family Learning Institute's annual fundrasing event, Bee on Board for Literacy, a spelling bee. This year, it's a bit earlier than usual: May 4th.
You were incredible last year. Team Emma raised over $2,000, and the event raised over $20,000, to support free, one-on-one academic intervention for 2nd through 5th graders who are performing below grade level and come from households with low incomes.
Here's FLI's raison d'etre in a nutshell: 3rd grade reading levels correlate with high school completion, unemployment, criminal activity, and incarceration. FLI has test results that prove its programs work. Helping struggling elementary school kids whose families can't afford extra academic help creates a stronger and more just community for all of us.
FLI relies on financial support from local government, foundations, corporations, and individuals. The Bee is FLI's main annual fundraising event.
A bit about Team Emma: You who knew Emma knew her passion for learning. To honor her, every year we organize a team in her name, represented by her teachers, friends, or loved ones. At the moment, this year's spellers are Robin Gleason (Bach Elementary, 4th grade), Gretchen Hahn (Slauson Middle School, science), and Jen VanAlsburg (family friend). They took 2nd place in 2011 -- and this year are gunning for the title!
Fortunately, Crowdrise makes it easy to join us on Team Emma in helping close the achievement gap: click DONATE, or, if you're inpsired, click JOIN THE TEAM and create your own project page to share with friends and family. If you're in town, please join our table at the event! Tickets are $35 ($25 per ticket is tax deductible; straight donations are 100% tax deductible). If you buy tickets, just tell us in the message field how many, and we'll hold them at the door. You can also register at our website.
If internet payments aren't for you, you can mail a check to FLI at 1954 S. Industrial, Suite D, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Or phone us (734-995-6816) and we can talk about it.
Thank you for any help you can provide! We hope to see you there!
P.S. The Bee starts at 7:00 but doors open at 6:30 for hors d'euvres, drinks, and music by the Community H.S. Jazz Band. The venue is the Morris Lawrence Building at Washtenaw Community College.
P.P.S. I debate about whether or not to show people's donation amounts. Please tell me in your comments if you think that should be hidden.
