Flight for Teacher
Organized by: Jonathan Jolls
Hi, my name is Jonathan and I've been teaching ESL for the past three years. Half of that time was spent in the Republic of Georgia (between Turkey and Russia) and I've been lucky to get another chance to teach there again.
This past year has not been fun. My last job was in China and things did not go well between the new visa laws, my school, and immigration. I found myself stuck in Hong Kong for four months barely scraping by on odd jobs and random tutoring gigs. When it got to be too much to handle I spent what little savings I had and came back home to Michigan. I quickly found some temp work but lost my assignment when I became ill and was hospitalized for nearly a week. Since then I have been unemployed and even had to stay in a homeless shelter for a few days.
But things are looking better. I am staying with family and have recently been offered a chance to work at a prestigious private school in Tbilisi, Georgia. Here is an excerpt of the email sent:
I’m glad to inform you that your lesson plan was to our standards... I’d like to offer you a position of a full-time teacher at Newton Free School starting from the academic year 2014-2015. This would include:
One class, full-time (4 times a week) – Grade 10, Level Upper-intermediate. A skill-based lesson to high school students, Grades 8-12. You will meet each class every fortnight. The lessons cater for each skill. However, the main focus is supposed to be on speaking.
Writing club – This is going to be one of the extracurricular clubs which are scheduled after classes between 4- 6pm. You’ll meet your students twice a week for an hour each time. General focus is on developing students’ writing skills and tasks can be as varied as descriptive writing, writing a statement, writing a report, etc.
SAT preparatory class - If you have experience of helping students prepare for SAT exam it would be ideal to have a special class.
Please let me know what you think about this and confirm your availability. After we agree on the academic part, you will be contacted shortly to discuss other details."
This is a fundraiser to help me with a one-way flight and traveling expenses to get settled and start teaching my new classes.
