May 27, 2009 is a day I will always remember - the day my first nephew, Nicholas, was born. From the moment I met him I knew we would always have a special bond. From his first smile, laugh, words, birthdays - every event was so exciting. At a young age Nicholas was diagnosed with a speech delay but he was never shy to call me "auntie" or say "I love you" which usually followed with me spoiling him with his favorite snacks. When Nicholas turned four he was diagnosed with Autism. I didn't know much about it at the time. I did notice the hugs and kisses were less frequent, but I would still get a look in the eye with a big hug and it remains to this day the best feeling in the world.
Since his diagnosis, my sister and brother-in-law have done everything they can to ensure Nicholas receives the best services possible. Nicholas is an incredible little boy who loves to swim, play at the beach, and finishes 1000 piece puzzles in a day.
It is very expensive to get all the services that Nicholas needs but thanks to organizations like the Doug Flutie Foundation and their grant to the Scituate C.O.R.S.E Foundation, many children now have access to life-changing programs. Nicholas has good days and bad days, but one thing is for certain – with the help of C.O.R.S.E he has had more good days and is continuing to amaze us every day. The Scituate C.O.R.S.E. Foundation is a critical part of Nicholas’ community and provides access to social, educational and recreational activities for all children, regardless of their disability.
Nicholas works so hard every day and inspires all of us. I could not be more excited to run the Boston Marathon for him and raise money for the Doug Flutie Foundation.
Please consider donating today to this amazing cause, helping not only Nicholas and our family, but all the other families out there that are in need of support from the Doug Flutie Foundation.
