BENEFITING: AFFORDABLE HOUSING CORPORATION OF MARION INDIANA
EVENT DATE: Apr 16, 2011
This is a kickoff party that will be the starting point of a sustainable urban community garden in a poverty stricken neighborhood. The goal is to take five years and throw myself and others into the garden with the intent of the Center City Neighborhood taking complete ownership within five years! The garden will be a place to build community with a meeting place in the center for people to get to know their neighbors. Let's turn a part of Marion around TOGETHER! We plan to do this by tilling up the land in mid-April. The annual party will be a few days prior to the tilling. The land has been donated to this project. A farmer has agreed to till up the land for free. The help we need is to provide the tools, compost, mulch, and many more items that are needed to get us moving towards change! This is a grassroots project the goal is to get this all going based on the community instead of leaning on agencies. The neighborhood will own it! The party will be in the form of a block party with food and games. The games we will play includes throwing the tomato in the faces of the organizers. It's a funny spin on throwing a pie at someone and the idea of throwing tomatoes at someone you are sick of... haha. We are also going to do a spin off of a popular cooking show by giving some different neighbors a few ingredients and having them cook up a dish. One of the ingredients will be a TOMATO! There will also be a seed trade. Many more events will conspire as times get closer. There is a graphic designer at a nearby school who is coming up with a design to put on t-shirts, flyers, and whatever else needs our design. We are ready to cross the start line. Will you join us?? The money raised will go towards the items needed to run a garden like shovels, compost, seeds, and many other items that will walk the neighborhood towards sustainability!
