There is an important story to be told in Wisconsin’s Central Sands region. Environmentally sensitive waters such as Lake Huron, and Long Lake in the Central Sands region, are drying up having been the most visible victims of poor groundwater management. Now Pleasant Lake, Lake Burnita, Fordham Creek, Little Roche-a-Cri Creek, Chaffee Creek, and Tagatz Creek are faced with losing their water as well due to ill-conceived and poorly regulated and the proliferation of high capacity wells. To underscore this point, the Little Plover River was recently named among the top 10 most endangered rivers! Wisconsin is a water-rich state. But groundwater, the water source for 70% of the population and over 90% of water used for farming and industry, is a limited resource. Wisconsin law leaves rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands unprotected from excessive groundwater pumping, and do not require consideration of the impacts of High Capacity Wells and their cumulative effects on groundwater supply or groundwater-dependent surface waters except in very limited circumstances. CAFOs, industrial agriculture, and frac-sand mining facilities along with their accompanying insatiable thirst for water are quickly exacerbating the large scale problem. The result? Property values plummet, recreational opportunities lost, tourism dollars disappeared, and ecosystems destroyed. A recently released short documentary graphically shows the problem and explains what is happening to these magnificent waters.  Now, under pressure from some lawmakers to take away our rights to this water, citizens need to be mobilized to engage in this conversation.  From the company that produced Not Standing Still: The Degradation Of Wisconsin’s Waters a series of short commercials will be created to demonstrate what is happening and to alert people that the time to act is now.
