BENEFITING: Childrens Feeding Network, Inc.
I (Wendy Selvig) am heading up a team here in Panama who is actively involved in working with African refugees who are victims of human trafficking. There are several refugee camps in Costa Rica and thousands of refugees. These refugees come from places like Congo and North Africa where many of them have lost loved ones to slaughter and murder from corrupt governments. These people are truly in a hard place and traffickers will come to them and promise to get them to the USA for a certain amount of money... then they will take them part of the way and drop them off in South America and try to convince them to go into soldiering or sex trade. That is how camps pop up in Central America that are full of Africans.
LONG TERM SOLUTIONS: We are currently in discussions with the IOM (http://www.iom.int/) and a non-profit organization that we know of who specifically works with refugees around the world. We are seeing what it will take to bring the organization in to work with these refugees. The program helps the refugees find out what their giftings and personality strengths are, helps them give back to communities, and helps them make hard decisions (like should I go back to Africa?).
SHORT TERM SOLUTIONS: We are working short term with small teams from Panama to go to the main camp once or twice a week and provide a meal for the refugees who haven't eaten. They are not being fed at this camp and are very hungry.
FUNDS NEEDED: If you would like to help with this outreach, we need a minimum weekly amount of $100 to feed 250+ people once a week. $200, we can go twice a week and feed them. Long term we will need more to facilitate the training from the non-profit organization we are hoping to bring in. More details will be provided on that later.
