THE STORY:

Food is central in most cultures as a way of bringing people together. Hang Time™ is an amazing program in the city of Bridgeport, CT, that uses food to bring together even the most opposite of individuals for a better, safer community. Hang Time is in need of support to continue providing a hot meal each week. I am the interim Executive Director of Hang Time™, an organization that started in 2014, and is in the process of becoming a 501c3. Hang Time™ began as a support group for group and gang affiliated Reentry individuals that were trying to turn their lives around. At every meeting they are promised five simple things, • They will have a hot family style meal. • Learn something they didn’t know before. • Have access to mental health providers without fear of stigma or shame. • Receive information about jobs opportunities and other helpful community programs/events • And receive interview clothing or other donated goods. The individuals that come to Hang Time™ that were once rival group or gang members who could not even walk down the same street; now they sit, eat together, and discuss current events, past traumas, and issues in their lives. I’ve seen individuals who were constantly in conflict, who now debate the U.S. debt to China, gun laws, and more in a respectful manner, even surprising themselves when they agree with one another. They’ve put conflict behind them and learn to see each other as human beings. Our motto is “Real Talk with Respect™” because that is what these individuals have. They learn to respect each other and understand each other for the person that they are not the gang/group they used to belong to. On any given week we may also be joined by U.S. Attorneys, off duty cops, politicians, financial advisers, and mental health professionals; all of whom can provide information or aid to the Hang Time™ participants, and enjoy the discussion and the different perspectives in the room. Dinner, this breaking bread together, is hugely important to our program in its symbolic sense, and the fact that this may be the only hot meal some individuals have in a week. Dinner each week costs about $100 to $120 for 25-35 individuals. Please help us to raise money so that we can continue to provide a hot meal at Hang Time™!
