Food Forest Collective - Community Based Carbon Offset
Organized by: Melina Hurtado
The Low Down: We're starting a revolution! Food forest collective aims to shift the culture of carbon offsetting. Instead of profit based mono culture forests that are cut down for furniture - we're planting food forests in communities where food is needed most. It's a bit of a game changer!
The Nitty Gritty: Food Forest Collective is a nonprofit dedicated to plant food forest areas in Latin America countries where 100 000 square miles of old growth forest has been lost in the last 10 years alone, an area larger than the state of Oregon!
This same region has chronic undernourishment. Planting trees that sequester carbon is one thing - but how about trees that offset while alleviating world hunger; combat climate change; empowering communities who can not only eat the food, but sell it locally. It's a sustainable solution and it's already working in our incredible pilot project in San Mateo, Costa Rica.
By partnering with communities to plant food forests we not only address climate change worldwide like traditional carbon offsets, but we address longterm solutions for surrounding air, soil, water and animals. A full food, medicine, and market system is planted with every little tree!
