BENEFITING: FoodCorps, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Aug 07, 2016
Five years ago I was looking for a position that combined national service with a passion for garden and food education. What I found was FoodCorps, and for the next two years I not only helped to transform the school food environment in High Point, North Carolina, but transformed my life trajectory into one aimed at connecting kids to real food. As a service member in the inaugural FoodCorps cohort, I taught daily garden and cooking lessons, visited local farmers to procure produce for cafeteria taste tests, and helped food service staff plan seasonal menus. In the years since, FoodCorps has grown-- to 8 new states, to quadruple the number of original service members, to a sustainable program model with school communities as focal point for making lasting change. And I've grown, too, from a service member supporting 5 schools, to a program manager supporting service members and partners across 6 states. I have never stopped learning and growing with FoodCorps and it is my hope that in the next 5 years FoodCorps will continue to inspire leaders to serve up change.
