CRUSHED LIVES RESTORED
By Pastor Scott Carranza
What makes the Academia Mauricio Saravia (AMS) so special? Moms might say it’s Sister Nely, our coordinator. Dads might say it’s the price. The kids might claim it’s their teacher. But if you were to ask Brother Jesus & Sister Rita (pictured at left with their two daughters) they would answer it is the love of Christ.
Their daughters first started attending our program in the Spring of 2010. Then last August 2011 Brother Jesus fell at work and broke 5 ribs and crushed 4 vertebrae at his construction job. He should have been paralyzed. In the middle of some very dark days our ministry brought them some light.
They approached me and asked about our church. I shared and took Sister Rita to meet my wife and all the ladies who were gathered at the women’s ministry and she was quite literally embraced immediately. They started attending in December 2011 and God has been busy ever since engineering a restoration in their lives. Jesus is now our carpentry teacher (that sounds Biblical!) and Rita is our devotions teacher in the Academia and they both serve as ushers in our church.
Through the AMS and by God’s grace we are doing so much with so little and many lives are being touched! Now we have a 4-year plan in place that will expand our work from serving 50 kids in two nights to serving more than 100 kids per week over 4 nights of ministry. Spanish families drive from as far away as Englewood, Westminster, Aurora, Thornton and even Brighton. Many have attended for more than 1 year. Others even pay us more than what we ask for ($30 for a 10-week course). Why? I think it’s because they sense the love of Christ in everything we do.
Join us! Pray (post this newsletter on your fridge and intercede for us daily), volunteer (we need tutors and teachers), invest (give a 1 time $30 scholarship for a kid to attend our program or become a monthly investor at any amount. It costs us $43 per month for a kid to continuously attend our program), or introduce me to a possible sympathizer via email. Just send both that person and myself an introductory email and say that you think a possible synergy could develop out of our mutual interest to help kids in the inner city. Include our names and telephone numbers and I will do the rest.
Our goal was to enroll 70 kids by January 2013 but we have already surpassed that goal with 75 kids enrolled right now in our Fall 2012 session. Any help you give in Jesus’ name will only widen and deepen our impact! Thank you and God bless you always!
