Memorial Day through Labor Day, 2015
You're invited to:
SHARE A MEAL, MAKE A DIFFERENCE
This summer, we’re harnessing the power of group giving – and a great dinner party – to donate food for kids in need. We’re calling upon our passionate and generous Erie community to sit down and share a meal, while donating meals to kids at Sister Gus' Kids Cafe.
See "How much should I donate?" below!
Cook for Friends. Feed Kids.
From Memorial Day to Labor Day, groups will gather around the table as friends, families, colleagues or classmates, knowing that by coming together, we can ensure children have the nutrition they need to grow, learn and thrive.
Did you know that more than 90% of the kids attending Erie public schools are “food insecure?” This means that families can't afford to eat balance meals, or their food runs out before there's money to buy more.
When kids are hungry or malnourished, they cannot learn or grow or thrive.
Empowering individuals to become part of the solution, FOOD for Kids offers ways to make singular impact – by uniting hearts to tackle Erie's childhood hunger in a collective way.
HOW TO JOIN THE PARTY:
STEP 1: BECOME A MEAL HOST
Ready to get started? Sign up as a team member here and you’re on your way! We'll get in touch with you ASAP. In the meantime, schedule your FOOD For Kids meal, and plan your guest list. We’ll help! We’ve put together a FOOD tool kit for you that includes placemats, place cards and more to inspire you and remind your guests of the goal.
- Visit our Facebook page to see what others are doing, and email FoodforKidsErie@gmail.com at any time for more details or if you have questions.
STEP 2: INVITE GUESTS AND PLAN YOUR MENU
Whether your specialty is hot dogs and hamburgers – or full-on Julia Child meets Martha, check out our social media pages, each serving up recipes and inspiration for hosting an authentic meal that feeds every appetite.
As you invite your guests, let them know that instead of bringing wine or a gift for the host, you’ll be collecting donations for FOOD For Kids. (Speaking of this, start thinking about how you'll collect these - the goal is online donations on this page - will you ask your guests to donate in the days leading up to your party? Will you pass around an iPad before or after your meal?)
STEP 3: MEAL TIME
Host your party! Sit down with the people you love, share a meal, and ask your friends to donate. See how many meals your ‘team’ can provide for Erie kids in need. Share your pictures on our Facebook page!
STEP 4: GET COMMITMENTS – FOR MORE MEAL PARTIES!
The real power of the party is your infectious enthusiasm! All those friends who came to share your meal? Sign them up to host their own FOOD For Kids party to keep the meals and the donations coming!
"How much should I donate?"
Each meal at Sister Gus' Kids Cafe costs $3.50 to provide. So, per child:
- $ 17.50 = meals for 1 child for 1 week
- 35.00 = meals for 1 child for 2 weeks
- 70.00 = meals for 1 child for 1 month
- $ 35.00 = 10 meals
- 70.00 = 20 meals
- 105.00 = 30 meals
- 175.00 = 50 meals
- 280.00 = 80 meals
- 350.00 = 100 meals
"So what happens after Labor Day?"
That's a great question. Here's what we hope happens: these parties go viral and hundreds of people are sharing meals and collecting thousands in donations for Sister Gus' Kids Cafe. Anyone who has joined the team and hosted a meal will be invited to attend a special celebration and announcement of total donations.
We may even bring one of those epic fake checks and take a giant group photo as we present it to the Kids Cafe.
We know this for sure - we can't wait to see how far our generous Erie community can take this idea and truly make a difference in the lives of kids in need right here at home!
