"For Here or To Go?" is the first feature film of its kind- an untold story of legal immigrants and immigrant entrepreneurs in America. The film humanizes the immigration debate by focusing on the millions who live in uncertainty while striving to achieve the American Dream, and the adverse effects of America’s immigration policy on its global competitiveness. I came from India to the United States for higher education in 2005 and have been living on a temporary visa since. It is projected that it’ll take anywhere between another 10 - 70 years before I can live legally without remaining beholden to an employer or start a business of my own. Millions of other immigrants and their families struggle on various fronts of life under the current laws living in decades of uncertainty. Many give up and leave America after spending years working here but never able to call it home. The complexities of the American legal immigration system are extremely challenging to explain to people and often get lost or misrepresented in the mainstream rhetoric. Far less known are its very real effects on human life and potential. A classic catch-22 in many ways- living the American dream on the surface but with a constant, whimsical impermanence which stems from arbitrary factors like one’s country of birth, an employer’s annual budget or the state of the global economy. An infinite wait in which one can live but never belong. In other words, permanently temporary. “For Here or To Go?” was born out of the need to communicate this absurd and needless existential dilemma to the rest of the world; to humanize what technologists, economists and policy experts have been saying for years with their research on America's flawed immigration system. Without any prior training or aspirations as a filmmaker I chose to make one as the medium best fits the need for a solution to the problems of awareness, empathy and persuasion. The film is designed so that an authentic media representation of the core issues is created and anyone affected by those issues- immigrants and experts alike- have the ability to have a compelling communication with their friends, families, peers, co-workers, employers and lawmakers. A release date of March 31 is set. We now need your help in reaching 100 U.S cities which requires a strong national marketing campaign. The film is inspired by true immigrant stories and strives to amplify the narrative on the benefits of immigration in today's times I've got a $25,000 match from the generous Brad Feld and Amy Batchelor, I hope you can support in helping spread this story far and wide.
