BENEFITING: Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation
EVENT: New York City 2016
EVENT DATE: Sep 25, 2016
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation has always been one that I admired. Being so close to New York City, I personally knew people who were directly effected by the 9/11 terror attacks. This run, which is made to follow New York City Firefighter Stephen SIller's last footsteps as he, after strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, lost his life attempting to save others. The goal of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is to continue Stephen’s legacy by supporting our nation’s first responders and service members. The foundation supports Building for America’s Bravest which constructs specially adapted smart homes for our most catastrophically injured service members. In January 2015, the Foundation also raised over one million dollars to fully pay off the mortgages for the families of slain NYPD Officers Wenjian Liu and Luis Ramos.
When my husband and I began dating, I learned that his father, Fire Fighter Joseph A. Morstatt, had been a huge part of this tragic time. He spent countless days, which turned into weeks and months, assisting in the search and recovery mission at Ground Zero. After his retirement, he began assisting in a traveling 9/11 exhibit. Below is a link to a great article in which my father in law explains more about the Siller foundation and his role and reasoning in traveling with the exhibit:
Unfortunately, like too many people who were at Ground Zero after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, my father in law discovered he had 9/11 related cancer in 2013. He fought a tough battle and we are all blessed to have had the years he fought through. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his illness and passed away March 5th, 2016. His life was dedicated to always serving and helping others. To put into words is love for being a fireighter and for his dedication to helping other would be impossible. He was a contributor to the Stephen Siller Foundation which I wasn't even aware of when I ran my first Tunnel to Towers run last year. I just knew I wanted to show my appreciation for those who run toward tragedy and put their lives on the line everyday and contribute in my small way to such an amazing foundation.
This year, I am running in his memory. I hope to raise a small portion of what he was able to raise and continue to support this amazing cause. If you would like to run or walk with us on September 25th, please follow the link below:
