THE STORY:

Thanks to all of your hard work, it looks like we finished in 3rd! Stay tuned for an official announcement. If still interested in giving or if you missed the deadline, visit our website: https://themonumentquilt.org/donate/

The Monument Quilt, by artist/activist collaborative FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture, is an on-going collection of stories from survivors of sexual and domestic violence. It is designed to build a new culture where survivors are publicly supported, rather than publicly shamed. Written, stitched, and painted onto red fabric, our stories literally blanket city and town centers to create and demand public space to heal. The Monument Quilt tells the stories of many survivors, not just one. The Monument Quilt has toured the country with displays in 22 different cities and towns across the US.

As the quilt continues to grow, survivors, loved ones and supporters are encouraged to make a square through workshops facilitated by leaders across the country.

Your donation will support:

  • Materials for our studio, including supplies for survivors to create their own quilts
  • Our final display on the National Mall, including signs, tents, banners, performances, and more
  • A full time staff person to manage our ongoing communications and development efforts

Since the project began in 2013, over 1,000 collected quilt squares have been displayed in 22 different cities across the US (read more on CNN and MSNBC), including Durham, NC; Baton Rouge, LA; Oklahoma City, OK; Mission, SD; Chicago, IL; and Queens, NY. In April 2016, 1500 stories will be displayed in our hometown Baltimore, after a month long awareness campaign blanketing the city with messages of support for survivors on billboards and bus ads. During the summer of 2016, in partnership with Mexico City based La Casa Mandarina, the quilt will embark on a West Coast tour that will culminate at the US/Mexico border, to highlight the experiences of undocumented immigrants. In fall 2017 in Washington, DC, 6,000 fabric squares will blanket over one mile of the national mall to spell “NOT ALONE.”

Our next big event is Not Alone Baltimore, a month long awareness campaign blanketing our hometown with messages of support for survivors, on billboards and bus ads. In partnership with local grassroots organizations, service providers and the city, we are organizing a series of panel discussions and town halls gatherings for survivors will be part of the month of March and early April campaign.

At the end of Not Alone Baltimore, on April 9, 2016, the Monument Quilt will blanket two blocks of North Avenue between Howard and Charles Street with more than 1000 stories from survivors of sexual and domestic violence and messages of support from their communities. The day long event will include readings, discussions, workshops and performances.

More about FORCE: Through tactics such as creating temporary monuments to hijacking websites of popular brands, FORCE creates a platform to incite action and support a positive culture shift to end sexual violence across mainstream culture and media.  FORCE is founded and led by Hannah Brancato and Rebecca Nagle—creative educators, organizers, and activists in Baltimore, MD.  FORCE creates art actions to generate media attention and get millions of people talking. They are best known for their 2012 viral panty prank, PINK loves Consent, in which a fake website and social media campaign promoted a new line of consent-themed underwear supposedly by Victoria's Secret. The internet phenomena got thousands of people talking about consent and sexual empowerment. Currently, they are in the midst of the Monument Quilt, an on-going collection of stories from survivors of sexual and domestic violence which will eventually blanket the National Mall with the phrase Not Alone.

NOTE: Your donation to FORCE and the Monument Quilt will be processed through our fiscal sponsor, Greater Homewood Community Corporation.
