BENEFITING: YOUNG WOMEN EMPOWERED
EVENT DATE: Aug 21, 2016
Many girls today grow up feeling invisible and unseen, pressured to feel perfect while not having an outlet to discover what they really feel and think.
Giving young girls a voice and ensuring that it is heard will give all of us a brighter future.
So how do we ensure that we create this brighter future?
This Crowdrise campaign is one answer to that question.
This campaign raises money for girls to attend a weeklong writing camp. The scholarships created as a result of the campaign will go toward girls who could otherwise not afford to attend. During this camp, they will have time to create, write, paint, and more. They'll be given a safe space to be themselves and to take on leadership roles and - most signficantly - to be heard and seen for who they really are.
So What does Beyonce have to do with this?
When Beyonce released her visual album Lemonade, she also unleashed a creative awakening and held herself up as a complex artist. She looked back on history and on the role of women in history, specifically women of color. Her work transcended the catchy pop tunes we've come to expect and showed a new depth to her work and as a black woman embracing her heritage. The work also is about sisterhood, empowerment, togetherness, and acceptance. Lemonade is complex and worthy of reflection.
I am gathering others together in support of girls' voices and who want to create a safe space for them to create. If you believe as I do that girl's voices matter and that they deserve the chance to steep in powerful female music, art, and writing, I need your support in donating to a Washington-based non-profit that has put together a program for girl writers.
Where Will Your Money Go?
You want to donate, but you also want to ensure that your money is going to make a real impact. It will.
The money for this fundraiser will go directly to Y-We Write, a summer program for women writers. Each woman will get the opportunity to watch and react to Lemonade with her own work of art.
Y-We has crafted a special program, in which girls at the camp will watch Lemonade together and respond to it through their writing and art. The organization will give girls the option to submit work they create in that workshop and throughout the camp as a whole for a blog or lit mag related to the project.
Y-We Write is a partnership with Hedgebrook, a world renowned women's writing retreat. It will take place from August 15-21 at the Whidbey Institute.
It costs $900 per student to attend the camp, and this money will go toward providing girls with full scholarships to the program.
What Are the Rewards for Donating?
We know that giving women the opportunity to think deeply about their place in the world is important to you.
We also want to give you a tangible thank you for your participation.
Here's how we'll do that according to your donation level:
- $25: Access to online forum where young women's writing and art from Y-WE Write will be posted
- $50: Y-WE Write signature T-shirt
- $100: Handwritten thank you note from a girl at Y-WE Write
- Copy of a one-of-a-kind inspiring piece of writing from the Y-WE Write Camp.
- $500 or more: Exclusive opportunity to attend the Y-WE Write Open Mic on Whidbey Island on August 20th to celebrate young women's voices (must pass a WA state background check)
Every amount donated matters, from $10 to $5000. Though we encourage you to give an amount that is meaningful to you, no amount is too small in reaching our project goal. Every bit matters!
**Your donation is also fully tax deductible.**
