BENEFITING: United Way Silicon Valley
Since moving to San Jose a few years ago, I had the opportunity to get involved in my community to help make a difference in the lives of young children. I have been mentoring 2 kids, Rueben and Martin in East San Jose for the past 2 years. It's the highlight of my week to see their smiling faces each time.
The Alum Rock School District is the fifth largest school district in Santa Clara County, serving families in East San Jose who face multiple challenges, including limited quality preschool opportunities. To make matters worse, in the past five years the state has cut nearly 33% of preschool education funding. Too many children in the Alum Rock School District enter kindergarten without the language, literacy, social and other skills needed to ensure school success. This hurts their ability to read proficiently by the time they complete third grade, which is essential for future academic success. Kids who start behind often stay behind.
National research shows that children who are proficient in reading in elementary school are much more likely to be successful later in life. We are not just investing in our children’s future; we are investing in our own future as well. Silicon Valley depends on a strong workforce that is capable of succeeding in a knowledge-based economy. Please join me in helping to prepare children for a successful life!!
