It's great to be able to give a little back to Fortune -- a force for good that I remember from the beginning of my career, as a Brooklyn DA. The Fortune Society's Alternative to Incarceration programs were highly regarded by Courts and the prosecutor's office. Many of us admired Fortune's work back then, knowing that the conviction was the "easy part".
If we really want to help people who are already involved in the criminal system to improve their lives, we should recognize the real work begins after the conviction.
The Fortune Society is a nonprofit social service and advocacy organization, founded in 1967, whose mission is to support successful reentry from prison and promote alternatives to incarceration, thus strengthening the fabric of our communities.
Fortune works to create a world where all who are incarcerated or formerly incarcerated can become positive, contributing members of society. We do this through a holistic, one-stop model of service provision, based on more than 40 years of experience working with people with criminal records. We’ve found that without a solid foundation in core skill areas, too many of these individuals resort to the self-destructive choices that result in crime and incarceration. Our continuum of care, informed and implemented by professionals with cultural backgrounds and life experiences similar to those of our clients, helps ensure their success.
