THE STORY:

About a year ago I transitioned out of genuinely the best job in City government. I had the privilege of working at City Hall for two administrations on some pretty neat things that I know helped a lot of New Yorkers. As much I loved City Hall, those five years were pretty stressful – and it became quickly apparent that I hadn’t completely taken care of myself the way I probably should have. And as I transitioned out of a place I cherished, I was fortunate to transition into two things that are the reason I'm doing this: running and advocacy.

After a random post from a friend who works at New York Road Runners about registration for a race, I ended up going for a mere 5K - and I got hooked – running in races across the country and even qualifying for next year’s NYC marathon. It’s kept my head clear, allowed me to decompress, and kept me physically/mentally healthy.

The firm I went to after leaving City Hall was a clear choice for me because of their advocacy on behalf of a whole host of admirable clients – especially the Alternatives to Incarceration/Reentry Coalition, a group of non-profits that provide a full spectrum of services for those involved in the criminal justice system. It is increasingly apparent that judges need the opportunity to sentence certain defendants to quality counseling and community service rather than prison. I believe in the tireless work they do to provide supportive services that gives people they help they need. So when my friend Laura Senkevitch at the Fortune Society said they needed another NYC Marathon volunteer to help fundraise to help support the work they do – I ‘ran’ towards the idea of a marathon in under 6 weeks on November 6th.

When a few friends heard I was fundraising for Fortune Society, their immediate comment was: “But Reggie, you were born and raised in Northern NJ and lived in the Financial District for 10+ years.. uh you’re not exactly the poster child on this one.” Well that's just it! If we truly want to improve public safety, prevent future crimes, break the cycle of incarceration, and yes, save tens of millions of tax dollars, then it can’t just be people I deeply respect like the Speaker, Jumaane D. Williams Brad Lander Leroy Comrie advocating on issues like this. It needs to come from average New Yorkers, from diverse places of the City, and even recovering public servants like me.

So here is the ask: please consider donating using the below link to help meet my fundraising target as a proud member of the Fortune Flyers. If you donate at least $26 dollars ($1 per mile), you’ll get a ticket to the Fortune Flyers Pre-Marathon party on October 26th. And if you donate a lot more, I’ll even personally deliver you BBQ!

The Fortune Society wrote -

Since 1967, The Fortune Society has helped thousands of formerly incarcerated people overcome challenges that would test the most resilient among us. After incarceration, people with justice-involvement face harmful stigmas and barriers that can increase their chances of returning to prison. Every year, our services help over 6,000 of these individuals gain acceptance and rebuild their lives.

Using a holistic approach, we provide a wide array of life-changing services to ensure that our clients have smooth transitions into the community. These services include counseling, health services, substance abuse treatment, education, housing assistance, advocacy, career development, and community education. In addition, our Alternative to Incarceration program has allowed young people and other individuals to avoid serving lengthy prison sentences, and instead develop the skills they need to lead successful lives.

We firmly believe that all humans are worth more than their worst deeds and strive to carry out this mission every day through our services and advocacy. With your help, we can continue to provide people with justice involvement more opportunities to rebuild their lives.
