For my 50th birthday, I'm raising $50,000 for the *non-profit Seismos Media to produce, along with Hero Productions, a much-needed foster care documentary, entitled "The Least of These."
Many of us do not often consider the children in the foster care system, much less give thought for the system itself. But, here's the deal: there are over 400,000 kids in U.S. foster care. And 250,000 children enter the foster system EVERY YEAR. On average, children spend over 2 years in foster care but many are there much longer. Of children and adolescents with foster care experience, 25% are diagnosed with PTSD--twice the rate of U.S. war veterans. 50% of foster girls will be pregnant before 19. Of the foster kids who leave the system without being adopted, more than 25% will be incarcerated within two years. #fosterlivesmatter
Foster kids, for no fault of their own, have been removed from the only home they have ever known. They have been separated from their parents (and often their siblings), and put into a system that may, or may not, work. Then they are given to the care of a stranger who may, or may not, care about them. Often they are moved multiple times, from home to home, school to school. These kids are traumatized beyond belief and then asked to act right and become good citizens.
Last year, at Hero Productions, we embarked on a film project based on a true story of a Florida foster child. That project will become a feature film in the future. But in the process of learning about our character's world...our eyes widened and our jaws dropped as we uncovered the facts about the hurting kids in foster care. Why aren't we hearing more about this?? We met many professionals in the foster care field from Florida, to Washington D.C., to our home in Tulsa. We were regularly encouraged to produce a DOCUMENTARY. Caseworkers wanted it. Private agency executives wanted it. -"Please."- Government agencies wanted it. Innovators and foundations committed to the cause wanted it. Foster parents wanted it. -"All people know is what they hear in the news--the tragedies and dysfunction."- Through a series of conversations and events, Hero Productions decided to put the documentary on the front burner. And Seismos Media was created to fund this and future documentaries through charitable donations.
The foster care world needs MORE PEOPLE to give kids who have come from incredibly difficult circumstances a strong, stable supply of love, advocacy and hope. But good people step back as they cannot see themselves being successful in helping these kids when all they see 'out there' is FAILURE. Many triumphant and wonderful stories exist, but remain untold! But just like the rest of the world, there are good guys and bad guys...heroes and villains...the dark side and the light side of the force. We want to portray a balance of both sides and help good-willed people see themselves in the foster care scene.
Your donation will help us get started. I chose the target amount of $50k because I'm an optimist...and it is kinda fun as I'm turning 50 (which is less fun). The documentary needs much more funding to become a reality. But if you get behind this--and encourage others and SHARE THIS PAGE with people who might have a heart for this issue---maybe we could get to $500,000? Or more! All the money we collect goes to the non-profit Seismos Media, and all monies received through this page will go towards producing the documentary.
If you haven't already---please watch the video on this page! And yes--that's me in those pics so many years ago! Except one, which is my big sister Cathy getting in trouble. #stillatroublemaker #preacherswife
THANKS to those of you who read all the way to the end! #youarepatient #Iamwordy

*NOTE: Seismos Media is still in process becoming a 501(c)3 but we are permitted by the IRS to begin receiving donations now.
