BENEFITING: PEACE 4 KIDS
Hi I’m Angie, The founder of the Shade Room.
I built this media company on Instagram because I believed it was important for ALL people to find their community…to truly be seen and to have a voice. This was a very personal effort for me because I grew up in the foster care system in Los Angeles and felt invisible for most of my childhood. The domestic violence that shattered my family also stole my voice. And I felt alone.
Then, I met my mentor Zaid Gayle who introduced me to Peace4Kids, a program that brings foster youth together to create a sense of belonging. Through poetry and film, we found the courage to share our stories, and heal from past traumas. My experience at Peace4Kids is something all foster youth deserve...a sense of family.
The dinner table is traditionally where families come together and learn from each other. As foster youth these moments don’t exist for us so I have helped Peace4Kids create a concept called the Mobile Village, a commercial kitchen on wheels. Our goal is to have this kitchen travel the streets of LA and connect with foster youth and the stories they have to tell. Join me in supporting their journey as we raise $20,000 to take our Mobile Village Kitchen on the road. The Shade Room will personally match every donation up to $10,000 over the next 20 days. So, instead of Shade, let’s throw some extra support to all the youth in LA who need a community of people who believe that their lives matter too.
