My experiences with cancer has unfortunately been more recent than my experience running any sort of race. My last race was the inaugural Seattle Rock'n Roll half-marathon in 2009. My dad very recently (Janurary 2017) passed away due to cancer. Just a few days before my dad passed, my sister mentioned that she was going to run another marathon (she's done quite a few of them) for the Elixer fund. Learning that she was going to do it by herself and the cause behind it (along with a few nudges from my family), I gave it a long thought of about 30 seconds and told her that I would run and raise alongside her. Having never ran a marathon before (or anything for a while), it definitely sounds a bit scary, but when I think about what my dad went through, it cannot compare.
The first joy of this adventure was brightening my dad's day with the news that my sister and I were going to "be crazy" and run the New York Marathon to raise money to help people with cancer. Dad's two kids were going to work together to raise money and run a marathon for him and anyone else that unfortunately has to fight this disease. About six days later, our dad passed away. Running this marathon with my sister and raising money to help cancer patients is now even more special.
Dad, this is for you!
