THE STORY:

Sunday Jump is curating the Literary Arts at the 23rd Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) at Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles on October 4-5, 2014. Organized by FilAm Arts in partnership with Grand Park, The Music Center, LA Metro, and CicLAvia, this year is unprecedented with FPAC being the first cultural festival at Grand Park, presenting over 500 artists, 400 volunteers, and over 100 partner organizations with an expected attendance of 20,000 people from all over the country. The Literary Arts at FPAC has a rich history, and Sunday Jump aims to tap into the literary roots of the festival in four ways: performances/readings, workshops, interactive areas, and by reestablishing the FPAC poetry slam.

1. Performances

Poets will rotate between the Literary Arts stage, the Natural Stage, and throughout the park.

2. Workshops

Educators and poets will use this opportunity to teach writing and performance skills by integrating Filipino culture and history.

3. Interactive Areas

  • Poetry Wall
Related to public art, an easel, multiple easels, or even a huge canvas wall will be used for attendees to contribute a word, lines, or a few lines at a time to a huge community poem (or multiple community poems if multiple canvases are used). The festival theme and ideas related to the theme would be supplied as the prompt.
  • Library
A closed off area for attendees to peruse books predominantly written by Filipinos and Filipino Americans. Books by Asian American writers or people of color will be included as well.

4. Katipunan Poetry Slam

Slams are competitive, entertaining, and interactive. Originating in the 80s in Chicago, the excitement of competition regularly packs houses, drawing in attendees intrigued by energetic and thought-provoking performances, united by the sense of community that a slam can facilitate.

For Filipinos, the modern poetry slam is an echo of the balagtasan (a poetic, political debate). Continuing the work of those who have paved the way before us, from Jose Rizal to Jessica Hagedorn, the slam provides a platform for us to showcase the variety of voices and points of view amongst Filipinos and Filipino-Americans today. Our already confirmed competitors include published authors and seasoned slam champions who are recognized both locally and nationally. There's no limit to what we do with our words, now let us get the community to hear our stories!

We are asking you to support Filipino art and culture by becoming a sponsor for this event. Your support will help provide prize money for the slam winner, cover expenses for equipment and supplies, and additional Literary Arts programming needs.
